I bought some yellow LED's made to be used as turn signals and wired them to my mirrors. The LED's were wired together on a ling circuit board and enclosed in a triangular plastic tube. The tube was clear so I painted it with flexible black paint and left a narrow section for the LED's to shine through. Would you believe the painted part is still perfect, vut the UV sun rays deteriorated the clear part. Well I let it go too long and I think some moisture affected the circuit board because a few lights on each aren't working. The lights that aren't working are in the middle of the board with one's working on each side of them. Could I clean the contacts or test to see if the bulbs will work? I'm wondering if I put probes next to the one's that aren't working to see if they'll light? Would I use 12 volts since the whole string is 12 volts or use a different voltage if probing next to one? What volt for just one? Thanks for your insight!!!
An individual LED operates on 2-4V depending on the type; yellow is around 2V. LEDs do not have any significant internal resistance as an incandescent lamp does, so an external resistor is required to limit the current. The external resistor also drops the voltage. A typical circuit for 12V operation is a single resistor in series with several LEDs in parallel. Too much voltage or too much current will destroy the LED. If you tap into the power right at one of the LEDs that is working, and jumper it over to one that is not working, then you would have the right current and voltage.
