What kind of wiring do I nee to install my subwoofer?
I am buying an 2 12 inch Audiobahns 1000w a piece, a 1600 watt amp Audiobahn, a 1 Farad Capacitor, and a custom box all for 600.
My problem is I do not know what kind of wiring I would need to put all of this together.
4 Gauge? Wiring kit rated higher?
And what do I need to install the capacitor.
Help would be greatly appreciated. I would love to get a list of kits or products that would solve my problems.
You will need 4 different kinds of wiring for ANY amp and sub install:
1. Power and ground wire of same gauge. In your case 4 gauge.
2. RCA cable to connect the head unit to the amp.
3. Any kind of 16-18 gauge to connect the remote turn on wire from the back of your head unit to your amp.
4. Speaker wires to connect your amp to your subs.
5. You will also need an inline fuse holder with proper fuse rating and install it less than a foot away from the battery. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!
Your capacitor will also need the same 4 gauge wiring that goes from your battery to your amp and ground. Just make sure you buy enough length to run from your battery to your capacitor to your amp and to your ground. Get a rough estimate with a tape measure. You can buy bulk wiring at an American or Best Buy or Circuit City or any local stereo shop. Usually at around $2-3 per foot of thick gauge wire and cheaper for speaker wire. 16-18 gauge wire you can get at a local hardware store or a Menards, something like that.
I would go this route instead of a kit because you'll save a lot more money. Capacitor should have instructions...you may not even need a capacitor in your setup because you're not drawing enough to warrant it. I'm running about 2000 watts Alpine (much more clean and efficient than Auidiobahn) and I don't have a cap.
Basically, power wire from your battery to an inline fuse to your amp. Then ground wire of SAME gauge from amp to BARE metal. Remote wire from back of head unit (usually blue) to amp. RCA from sub preout on the back of your head unit to your amp. Speaker wires from amp to subs. Look on crutchfield.com for wiring in parallel or series. Keep your power wire and RCA cable on OPPOSITE sides otherwise you'll get WAY too much noise. If they have to cross, cross them at a 90 degree angle.
That should be it.
