It is a 400 watt system, 125 each channel and a 150 watt 8 inch subwoofer. Speakers are rated at 6 ohms. Problem is, the wires are connected INSIDE the speaker cases, with no apparent way to disonnect them and put on new ones. Any ideas?
Is it possible. Yes, you will have to open the speakers (which is a bad idea if the speakers work fine). Sony designed the system with the correct gage of speaker wire. I mean is not like they just grab the first wires they can get a hold of. Bigger speaker wire (lower gage) will not make the sound system better (unless you want a better look or have it weight more). If you want to get longer cables you can always put some type of connection ends (anything for mid voltage will do) and extend it, just make sure that the connection does not allow them to short (ie touch) as it will burn the amp on your stereo. Now, this is when thicker cable may help as the longer the wire it needs more copper so that it will not heat up. But unless you are running it at close to full volume you should be OK at almost any length.
BTW, 400 watts is not how much power it uses all the time. When nothing is playing or when the volume is very low, it uses very little power (wattage). In a simplistic way, at half volume your stereo is a 200 watt stereo.
