Setting up and understanding car audio?
I am buying my first after market audio system for my car, and I have a few questions. They will be easily answered by someone who knows the field:
1.) What kind of amplifier do I need to get, if i will have a sub and several three-way speakers?
2.) What is the deal, I saw amps on Crutchfield that could put out 900 watts of power, for $249. Then on the other hand I saw some that had 4X 52 watts for $ 299. Why is the 900 watt cheaper, could I use that for my three-way and my sub? They were made by the same company.
3.) Is HD radio worth the hype, or is it another Betamax ?
4.) If I am getting an after market receiver, is it true that I will have to remove/bypass the cars factory amp... someone at Best Buy told me that....

Most cars have at least 4 speakers...2 in the dash or front doors and 2 in the rear deck. I'd suggest a 4 channel Amplifier to power these speakers. Depending on the wattage ratings of your speakers determines the size of amplifier you need. As far as adding a sub-woofer to the mix, any size would sound better than what you have now. Let me tell you about my setup, maybe that will send you in the right direction.
I have a 1997 Plymouth breeze(4dr)). I have a Pioneer super tuner that I purchased for $129. It's a 4x55 watt radio/Cd. My speakers consist of (2) 5.5" 80 watt Pioneer speakers $70 for the pair in the front door panels. (2) 6x9 300 watt Pioneer Speakers $70 for the pair in the rear deck. (1) 10" sub-woofer rated at 800 watts which is mounted in a ported enclosure...paid $95 for it. I have (2) Amplifiers, one is a 1000 watt Sony Explod...which powers the sub-woofer. I know what you're wondering..." A 1000 watt amp powering a 800 watt sub-woofer, won't that blow the speaker? The answer is NO, the reason is sub-woofers don't use a constant amount of power, so there's no danger. A 600 watt Jenson amplifier runs the smaller speakers. I have 4 gauge wiring between amps and battery. and the same runs to the sub-woofer. Factory wiring connects the smaller speakers. The sound is great. Don't go cheap on the wiring and connections(RCA). Ensure good grounds. If you are going to use more than one amplifier in your system, mount a power block near the amps so you only have to make (1) run from the battery. Capacitors are unnecessary unless you notice a lag in your sub-woofer's performance.
