ok so i have electronic items purchased in a country that uses 220v outlets (china). now that i'm back in the u.s., when i plug it in it doesn't get full power (its a light) and is very dim. It is just a transformer, which typically has a 2 : 1 turns ratio (ie. the 220 side has twice the coil windings that the 110 volt side has). So it can either step up the voltage from 110 to 220 or reduce it from 220 to 110. They are somewhat heavy, so for 500 watts, I expect 35#. I have an isolation transformer (1: 1 ratio transformer) rated at 250 watts, and it must weigh 25#. So check the shipping charges. I am surprised the Chinese product doesn't work with 110 volts, as most products are designed for export. The Chinese often design a single switching power supply capable of both 220 and 110 volt operation. Occasionally, they might have some sort of manual switch position for 110 volt operation. Big appliances like washing machines will have 220 volt motors, so there is no way of easily converting them to 110 volts without a boat anchor sized step up transformer (the motor probably requires at least a 1000 watt rated transformer).
