When I was in Iraq I had a chance to use he military issued night vision goggles in a very clear sky not hazed by city lights or the usual dust. I could see meteor showers with the goggles but not with the naked eye.
What would be the best commercial monocular night vision goggle, or camera to view stars that would be less than 500 dollars?
I have gotten a look through some night vision binoculars that were extremely good on stars. I didn't have much time to evaluate it. And i didn't take extensive notes, despite years of experience that says taking notes is a good idea. And, i have no idea how much it cost.
For $529 you can get an 8 inch Dob with a push-to computer. And $500 buys you a 10 inch Dob without a computer. Either will do better than night vision systems for stars and other objects, though not for meteor showers. I'd expect that unless the night vision stuff is very wide angle, you'd see more meteors naked eye.
I assume you're not still in Iraq, where the skies are dark. I'm pretty sure i wouldn't go for the dark skies. But i'd love to see them.
