Which Media Player do I need to view TDK DVD-RW from a Video Camera?
My friend is visiting from Germany and she purchased a brand new Sony video camera that records on the smaller DVD-RW disks. I can view the disk while it is in my DVD player on the computer but if I copy the data onto my hard drive and then try to view it, the computer doesn't recognize it.
Will the newest Windows Media Player v.10 recognize it or is there something else that would work better?
I have Windows XP.
You may need to do one of two things:
A) make sure the drive in your computer is able to read such disks (if not no media player will ever help untill you have replaced the drive)
B) make sure you have the proper codecs to read that type of format.
B is what normally throws people for a loop, but its fairly simple. Once your computer is willing to acknowledge and recognize the disk (in the My Computer window for example) you need to see if you can play it. Windows media player (with the proper codecs) will be able to play anything under the sun, no matter what version you have. But if you don't have the codecs you will get an error and an exlamation point next to the item in the playlist. From the media player you can run a search for the proper codec needed to play that file, and Microsoft will guide you to something they know and trust that is free for download.
But again, I just want to stress this to you, if your computer doesn't have a DVD drive, or one that is compatable to the minidisk, you are going to have to upgrade your drive. Just take the minidisk into any tech store and ask for a drive you can watch it with, then buy a phillips head screwdriver (the X one). You'll probably run yourself about $200 (thats at very most) but the new drive will come with instructions towards installing it. Follow these carefully and you can avoid the $50 minimum charge at a computer tech shop.
