mdf or fiberglass sub enclosure?
im looking to make a custom enclosure for my car and i waas wondering what is stronger fiberglass or mdf
i know fiber glass is strong only on curves and flat planes it gets much weaker
and that mdf is strong on flat planes and cant really be curved
i can curve fiberglass in my new car or i can do just a straight box for mdf but my question is which would be stronger.
im going to have 2 JVC arsenals with a rockford t1500-1bd powering then at 1 ohms so i will be pushing nearly 2000 watts rms with these speakers so i need my box to be incredibly strong and rigid
ive worked with mdf and i know someone who can help me with fiberglass and time is not important and money only if one will cost exceedingly more than the other
the box will be sealed and aproxamitly 2.7cubicfeet
so which would be be better for my system
The best answer really is both. through the use of proper construction either fiberglass of mdf can be made stronger. Fiberglass is strong no matter what shape it is in you just have to use enough layers over the entire box. If you make it correctly it will be strong enough to handle what you want. MDF can be strengthened through proper construction as well. If you use good cross bracing and have a double layered face plate then it will easily take your system. the real questions you need to ask here is how much space do i have to work with and how much money do i have to spend on it. for not a lot of money(30 -50$ if you are economical about things) you can build a great box for that system but at 2.7 cubic feet(is a lot bigger than it sounds) and given the shape restrictions of mdf it could take up a vast majority of your trunk. For probably twice that price tag you can build a fiberglass box that will utilize a lot more space that MDF boxes can't have access to. Despite what a lot of people think the shape of the box has little to do with how it will sound. If you take the proper precautions and time to build the box it will sound good provided the subs are of good quality and the the installation is done correctly. you just need to ask yourself if the cost of the box or the space in your trunk mean more to me.
I always dislike questions that go like "which one is better" because most of the time the subject items are each useful in the right situation. I have a lot of experience in making mdf and fiberglass boxes and i value them equally as useful methods depending on the specifics of the install at hand.
