Turntable has two male RCA-pin plugs. If I buy a 3.5mm Y adapter cable (2 RCA inputs to one stereo mini), will powered computer speakers give me enough volume without the need of a preamp? Important: I am not talking about sending the phono output into the computer,,, but rather into a set of POWERED computer speakers. I am told that the Y adapter will make it possible to use with headphones also but I kinda doubt it would work without some form of amplification.
Turntables made in recent years often have a pre-amp built-in. If that is the case, then the computer type speakers will work fine, because the output is at line level. If it is an older turntable, then no it won't work, for 2 reasons. 1 the level off a pickup cartridge is very low, much like a microphone. and 2. the sound recorded on a record uses an equalization curve so that high frequencies are greatly exagerated. It would sound very "tinny" to say the least.
So you need a pre-amp, one with the RIAA phono equalization, not a general purpose mic type amp.
