How do I properly use an anti-static wrist strap?
When handling PC components, how do I use an anti-static wrist strap to prevent static electricity from damaging the parts?
Also I read this at Wikibooks " In order to have a computer earthed, you need it plugged in at the wall but turned off at the power supply and at the wall."
What exactly does that mean and does it have anything to do with using the anti-static strap?
Ok, so if the computer is NOT plugged in to the socket (with the switch OFF, naturally!), then the PSU (and the case) is actually not truly earth-grounded.
But even if the PSU is not grounded, it's still possible to discharge electricity to the case, but just not as well.
In any case, it's how much caution you want to take, I suppose : )
I doubt that actual earthing contributes to ESD protection. What is important is that all surfaces and objects be bonded together by conducting connections. This way there is no possibility for harmful static charges occur. The earth wire is important because it bonds together all objects. Otherwise you would have to provide connections yourself.
While better than nothing, a real solution for ESD protection requires much more than a wriststrap. It may include using appropriate ESD-safe packing material, the use of conductive filaments on garments worn, conducting wrist straps and foot-straps to prevent high voltages from accumulating on bodies, anti-static mats or conductive flooring materials to conduct harmful electric charges away from the work area, and humidity control. Humid conditions prevent electrostatic charge generation because the thin layer of moisture that accumulates on most surfaces serves to dissipate electric charges. Ion generators are sometimes used to inject ions into the ambient airstream. Ionization systems help to neutralize charged surface regions on insulative or dielectric materials.
