Sudden loss of power in my car... what could it be?
I have a 83 Subaru GL and it's a push button start. I installed a new button the other day because the old one kept getting stuck which caused me to burn on the starter. That's all fixed now, but now when I turn the key, (sometimes) nothing happens. Usually the lights on the dashboard will come on, but there's nothing. When I first put the key in, the lights come on, but as soon as I'm about to hit the button, there's a subtle click noise and everything shuts off. This happened yesterday when I was leaving work, and after waiting about 20 minutes I tried again and it started right up. It happened again last night and I tried it this morning and once again, complete power loss. I don't think it could be the battery 'cause then it would happen all the time. I'm not sure if it could be a bad alternator or a shortage in a wire somewhere. Help me out. I need to fix this today 'cause it's my day off and I need a way to get to work tomorrow! Thanks!
Sounds like a loose ground. If you had a short, it would likely blow a fuse. But if it works sometimes and other times it doesn't, it it more likely a loose ground.
