1998 Chevy Malibu 3.4 V-6 will not start.?
It ran fine last night. Now I have no response at all when the key is turned. The battery was good(checked with volt-ohm meter, I repair electronics) and the connections are bright and clean. I also have no lights, no radio, no warning chimes for door open, seat belt, etc. The strange thing is some of the dash gauges are messed up. The RPM is at 4500, the speed and gas are past the 120 mph and full tank and stopped as far right as they will go. (and the battery is disconnected) I cannot even click on the overhead lights , I could before. PS the ignition/key problem these cars had has been bypassed with a module for two years without a malfunction. I do not understand, the start/charge is a simple diagram in the Haynes book, what is wrong? Thanks!
Thanks steve, but I have no power at all with the good battery connected. With the key in accessory or run nothing works, no radio, lights, chimes, nothing.
I was helping my friend out with his 1996 Pontiac Bonneville, and it had some very similar "gremlins". We tried everything... checked all the fuses, tested all the applicable relays, pulled the carpet up and did continuity checks looking for a bad ground. Spent about 4 hours doing this stuff.
After all this, we simply disconnected the negative battery terminal for 30 seconds or so, and then reconnected. Everything worked again!
Turns out that the Body Control Module must have gotten some sort of jolt that caused it to malfunction. Disconnecting the negative battery terminal reset the BCM and everything worked again! Unbelievable.
