Home made radio receivers & transmitters can they be made out of materials found at home or harware store.?
You should probably take a couple courses in basic electronics first. But yes, you can build radios out of parts that you buy at Radio shack, or parts that you take out of old radios and tv sets. Look for old radios and tv’s that people throw out, or one that people have stored in their basement (ones that don’t work any more.)
Look at a site called ‘Spark, Buzz, Bang and other good stuff’ which talks about making homemade radios.
Read a little about the early days of radio, to understand what Edison and Marconi and those guys were experimenting with.
You can have a lot of fun with this, only let me give you a few cautions. First, you’re not going to be able to build a radio anywhere near as good or a cheap as the ones you can buy in the stores. They have engineers design them specially and they pick the exact right parts and sell them by the thousands so they can recover their costs and make some profits.
Second, if you cause radio interefence with any licensed station, the Federal Communications Commission will track you down and put you out of business. (I know a guy this happened to, so please take this warning seriously!) They have direction-finding antennas that can trace your transmitter and find it no matter where you hide it.
It IS LEGAL to go on the air in the AM band, provided that 1) your antenna is under ten feet long, and 2) that your total power broadcast is under 100 milliwatts. (That’s 1/10 watt.) It may not sound like much, but that will reach several city blocks. You can be your own DJ, broadcast political commentary, even local news and current events.
Just stay within the law and you can have fun!
