Yes, you can use a projector to watch all the mentioned formats. Is is a good investment? That depends on you. The advantages front projectors have are screen size, impact and the fact they take up practically zero space. There is no arguing that displaying your computer, X-box, or movie on a 100" plus sized screen brings a huge level of excitement to your entertainment. However, the bulbs do go out (to be fair, this is also true of rear projection LCD and DLP projectors) after several thousand hours and replacement costs are anywhere from $250-$800 with the average being around $350. That being said, you could buy a HELL of a lot of replacement bulbs for the difference in price between a 100" projection system and a 100" plasma set (about $2000 for a solid High Def projector with a screen vs. $80,000 for a 100" plasma TV). Brand wise, Panasonic is excellent, Optoma is excellent. Take those factors into mind and then decide if a projector is worth it for your use.
