Medical Alert Systems for the Elderly, such as LifeAlert?
Which one do you recommend? Does Medicare help pay for any of them?
In Canada you have to pay for the service. My mother had it while she was still living on her own. I think its great, if it works like the one she had - she had to press a button every morning to let the monitors know she was all right and up and about.
She also had a little alarm she wore around her neck and if she fell or something happened she could press the panic button and help would be sent. It was all part of the same system.
If she didnt check in come morning they would phone her. if she didnt answer they would dispatch a rescue unit after contacting me seeing as she never went anywhere on her own and if she had forgot and gone out it would have been with me.
I think though that mom would intentionally not press her button so they would phone and she could have a little chat.
Another item I mentioned earlier was the bracelet that sets off an alarm if they leave the building. I think its an excellent idea because even the most conscientious staff can be distracted or busy with an emergency and someone like my mother would use that as a good cover to make her escape.
Another unrelated thing thats excellent for seniors is hip pads, they are worn under clothing and can help prevent hip fractures in the elderly if they do fall, Mom had those too and never ever factured a hip even though she did fall several times.
