does preamp gain effect line voltage to the guitar?
basically my thought was that with more gain, there is a higher line voltage to the pickups creating a bigger electric field around the pups resulting in larger magnetic flux in the strings.
but i wonder now, is that even remotely true? does gain affect voltage/current going to the pups?
No, you have it the wrong way round. A voltage signal comes out of the pickups. The pickup basically converts some of the mechanical energy of the moving string into electrical energy.
The preamp does not put anything into the pickup, it takes the voltage that's coming out and amplifies it, to increase the signal to a level suitable for driving the main amp, and also possibly to reduce noise that otherwise might be picked up by the guitar lead.
The important thing is that the voltage coming out of the pickups is the same whatever the preamp gain is set to.
