iPod, Zune, or Zen?
Which one i best and why??
I've had a number iPods over the last 5 years. (And currently I have two, an 80gb video and a 1gb Shuffle)
The iPod is nice. It has a really intuitive interface. iTunes is easy to use, and there’s LOTS of accessories out there for it.
But, at the moment, even a devoted iPod fanboy like myself has to admit that there are some pretty nice alternatives to the iPod from companies like Sandisk, Creative, Microsoft, and Philips (there are some links to my favorite model from each of those companies listed in the sources below).
They are definitely worth checking out... but I think the iPod is the world’s most popular MP3 player for a very good reason!
Don’t be swayed by the “haters”, though. It’s very fashionable to bash the iPod because it’s popular. Make sure you pick the MP3 player that’s right for you!
iPod vs Zune
Both the iPod and the Zune have pro’s and con’s. They both play MP3 files and they will both play each companies proprietary video format. They have very similar user interfaces. However, neither one of them will play the other companies music files (A Zune cannot play an ACC file and an iPod cannot play a WMA file).
The Zune has a larger screen then the iPod. It also has a unique wireless feature that, that currently allows you to share music with other Zune players (if you can find one). And one day, this feature might be used to download music, without the aid of a computer. This feature also provides integration with Windows Media Center Edition, and the XBox360!
The iPod, however, is the most popular MP3 player in the world. One of the things that comes along with unprecedented popularity is hangers-on (in the form of 3rd party accessories!). So, when you go into a Best Buy or a Circuit City, you’ll see a dozen or so Zune accessories – but you’ll likely see hundreds upon hundreds of iPod accessories. Everything you need to integrate your iPod with you home stereo, you car stereo, or your workout routine is out there if you’re willing to pay for it.
Apple has also gone to incredible lengths to compromise with the recording industry. By doing this, they have compiled the largest digital music store in the world. So if you download your music legally – iTunes has the best selection.
Despite people saying the iPod is overpriced, or the Zune is a bargain – right now the 30gb models from both companies are about $250. The iPod family consists of a number of different sizes, shapes, and technologies, though.
Ranging in size from 1gb to 80gb, and ranging in price from $80 to $400. Currently, the Zune is only available in one size – 30gb.
Another important thing to note is that the iPod incorporates two kinds of storage: hard drive and flash. Whereas the Zune currently only has a hard drive based model (although a smaller flash model will be available by the end of 2007). Hard drives are great if you’re interested in storing a LOT of music. But the iPod Nano and the iPod Shuffel both use flash memory. Unlike and hard drive, flash has no moving parts. Because of this flash has better battery life, allows for smaller devices, and is considerably more durable. The draw back to flash is the limited capacity for the price. The largest flash mp3 player on the market right now is 10gb (and the biggest iPod is 8gb).
