i have a 2008 prius with a single cd factory radio. can i connect an ipod with an interface adapter?
Most 2006-current model year NHW20 Prius do come with an aux-input jack and the ability to read MP3/WMA data discs, provided that it is not the base/optionless model. (Check your window sticker, or look for the MP3 logo next to your CD player, and check inside the center console (between front seats) for the aux-input jack.) You'll need a 3.5mm or 1/8" mini stereo male to male headphone cable to connect your iPod or other external audio device to the Prius through the aux-in jack. (You plug into the headphone/aux-out port in your audio device, then plug into the Prius' aux-in port.)
If you have distortion, first check the volume on your audio device going out.
You can also get some distortion if you are using the Prius' 12v DC outlet to recharge your audio device at the same time that you are trying to listen to it on the aux-input jack. Either do not charge at the same time as listening, or you will need to purchase a ground-loop isolator to remove the distortion (crackling or buzz/hum).
If you do not have the aux-input jack in your center console, you could get an FM transmitter instead. However, depending on how populated your local radio airwaves are, you may pick up some crossover signals, or have trouble finding an unused frequency to broadcast your iPod onto. Also be careful, as some of these FM transmitters can eat through batteries very quickly.
