*Help!* My temp gauge is red zone?
The temperature sensor is in the red zone on my 2005 Jeep and the car is beeping every few minutes. Obviously I know something is wrong, but I am just wondering what can cause this? And what should I do next?? Please help I am totally clueless about this stuff. Thank you!
There are too many possibilities to cover in detail in Answers, but here are a few suggestions. Other people will have some, too.
First, realize that that is a serious warning from your car. In essence it is a cry for help. Drive as little as possible, preferably not at all until you determine the cause and take appropriate action.
Check your coolant. That is a basic step that, if you are lucky, will be the main problem. It just might be too low. You would have to determine the cause then and hope it is not a major mechanical defect such as a bad head gasket or worse.
Slight possibility that the thermostat is stuck closed.
Water pump could be a problem. There are some easy tests to verify if it is working, but if you are, as you say, "clueless about this stuff," get some help. It could be a friend with knowledge, or it could be a mechanic you trust.
While you're under the hood, check your oil, too. It won't be the primary cause of this, but a "clueless" act would be to let the oil go way too low.
