How does the previous and current distribution of Earth's plates dictate the occurrence of resources?
Talking plate tectonics here. Resources in the question refer to copper, coal, oil, gas, gold and metals. Please, answer in plain English. . .my college textbook doesn't.
I'll try to keep it simple.
Two things to keep in mind:
1.) Many mineral deposits are in igneous formations, and originate in igneous processes. These are most common at convergent plate boundaries. (Or divergent ones, if you count rare obductions of seafloor deposits on land.)
2.) Other mineral deposits are lags--leftovers from the weathering of older material. This can be influenced by plate tectonics via location in the tropics versus higher latitudes, as well as tectonically-induced elevation.
