I have a 1997 Volvo Penta 3.0L GS. The oil pressure was acting funny, it was fluxuating a whole lot. I put a mechanical guage on it and it was spot on, read about 38lbs at idle (800rpm) and about 55-60lbs at 4,000rpm. Replaced the oil pressure sending unit with a new unit. The new unit used a spade terminal for the wire connection instead of the screw type that was on the other, so I just cut off the old connection and crimped on another end. Now Im getting funny results from my guage, its reading 70lbs with the motor running, with just the key on it pegs out. Why is this?
It sounds to me like the sender that you got is not the correct one for the gage you are using. the way a sender works is that it varies the resistance from it's terminal to the block of the engine based upon the pressure acting upon it. In that way as the pressure varies the resistance to ground also varies so the current through the meter on the gage is registering based upon that current flow. Long story short, you have the wrong sender
