Car Audio?
ok...I am putting a set of tweeters up front in my A-pillars, two 3 1/2's in the upper dash (OE), set of 6 1/2's (one in each front door panel) set of 6 x 9's (Rear deck) Two 12's (I am having the box built to exact sub specs) ... Now what I need to know, is of the size speakers and subs, I listen to fast hard beats, not that long drawn out rap beat, but metal, rave, and hard rock, and fast techno. What would be the best brand for each of these sizes? Best ohms? Best amps? Wattages? Crossovers (Active or passive?) I am looking for SQL not SPL
Ok, for the type of music you listen to I suggest you get 10's. The slightly smaller subs tend to be more accurate when it comes to your kind of music but 12's are an overall good choice.
As for subs, I agree with the JL audio assessment. Accurate and smooth. They will reporduce whatever you throw at them fairly nicely. The most important thing you can do in order to get the response you are looking for is to throw those subs in a sealed enclosure (to spec as you mentioned).
Alpine make great head units and good amps but there are many other brands out there that have proven to be all around better.
If you are looking for straight loud I suggest MB Quart Q (QSD) series components. The get loud and clear but some people have identified them as "harsh". Totally good for the type of music you listen too. For an all around performer I would personally rather go with the Focal KP2 component set. You can get either of these in a 3-way set up with a tweet, mid-range and mid-bass but they can get pretty pricey.
I suggest that you get a 2-way component set up from the above mentioned brands and not even worry about the 3 1/2 in your dash.
Also, it's good to have your tweeter and mid range colse together because when you start seperating them to far apart you have to do all kinds of tweaking to get the imaging right.
So bottom line:
- JL Subs - Image Dynamics are nice for accuracy as well
- Focal or MB Quart Q Series Components
- JL, Zapco, Mclintosh (good luck with that) amps
That system could cost you a pretty penny but you would not be disappointed....
