A few weeks ago I was at my friend's place, sitting on his porch, when we noticed a pretty large spider (compared to ones typically seen around here). My friend decided to throw a small leaf into the web. The spider ran away from the leaf, then after a few minutes, it went over and inspected the leaf, next, (to our surprise) it began to pick the leaf out of the web! Eventually it threw the unwanted object out of the web and returned to its hiding spot!
Its amazing to me to think that this little creature with such a small brain was able to perform a task like this. It seems to me that it had to decide wether or not it felt that it was safe to investigate the object caught in the web, then think to itself "I can't eat this junk...I'm gonna get rid of it!" What do you all think? Was all of this really just cut and dry? Were there really no 'thoughts' going on here? Was it really just reacting by using predefined functions that where hardwired into its brain by nature?
One of two reasons.
1. God designed the spider to be 'successful' and she does that.
2. micro evolution says that the spider web needs to be "invisible" and not be readily visible to potential pray. A leaf caught in the web would decrease the chances of a successful bug catch.
Either way, the spider is "programmed" to be (the most) successful.
