I want to install new speakers in my car, can I put in 6x9's without an amp and maybe a small sub?
Yes, you can replace old speakers with new ones if you wanted. You could even possibly add a sub but without powering it with a separate amp you would not likely get much output from it.
If you want to improve your car's audio system you will want to get new speakers and an amplifier to power them. This will give you significantly better sound than simply replacing the speakers alone. However, I would not suggest replacing the 6x9s which are probably in the back of the car but rather the speakers in the front of the car. Those are going to be the ones that you will want to make improvements to. You could also possibly add a component set if you really wanted to make a big improvement to your audio system. The speakers in the rear of the car are typically only used to fill the sound in the back of the car. The 6x9 size or any other odd size is not going to give you as good of sound quality as a circular speaker anyways.
